Episode 55: Villainous Villainy

This week on the show Ben, Sebastian and Jesse tackle the topic of villains. What makes a villain? Why do we create villains? Do we need villains to be able to understand ourselves? They'll talk about the villainy of Fred Phelps, Stalin and Hitler, as well as whether Batman would be a villain if he existed in real life. Also, Ben and Sebastian will share about the Mark Driscoll sermon they watched and the whole crew will share historically mundane moments in villainy.

Episode 52: The Swan Children w/ Hannah Ettinger and Connor Park


This week on the show Ben talks to Hannah Ettinger and Connor Park about the new magazine and online art gallery The Swan Children. The Swan Children was released last week and features the creative works of artists who grew up in the homeschool, Quiverfull, and conservative Christian communities. First, we talked to Hannah about the the idea behind the magazine and the projects genesis. We also discussed her hopes for The Swan Children and the ideas the magazine is trying to foster. Then we talked to Connor about his role as Editor-In-Chief and some background information on the homeschool movement.

Episode 50: The Winter Olympics

Sebastian and Ben settle in for a discussion about the Winter Olympics in Sochi. They'll discuss some serious topics about whether the Olympics are a form of embodied theology, as well as the political and economic realities of hosting the Olympic Games and whether bake sales are the solution. They'll also broach far less serious ideas such as what sports they'd like to see in the next Winter Olympics and why Sebastian thought Cool Runnings wasn't real. Episode 49: Before the War w/ Taylor Walling of The Wallings Jr.

This week I sat down with Taylor Walling to talk about music, songwriting, and artistic inspiration. Taylor and his wife Courtney make up The Wallings Jr. who recently released their debut album Before the War. We'll explore their method of songwriting, what they hope to convey through their songs, and talk about the stories behind several of the songs on the album, which was loosely inspired by letters written by Civil War soldiers.

Episode 48: On Being Muslim in America w/ Amir Arain

This week Ben talked to Dr. Amir Arain, the President of the Islamic Center of Nashville, about his Muslim faith, and in particular the experience of Muslims in the American South. We'll talk about the basic tenants of the Islamic faith, the cultural differences between different strains of the religion, and the response of moderate Muslims to the terrorist activities of radical groups. We'll also discuss interfaith cooperation and hopes for increasing acceptance of the Muslim community in the United States.

Episode 47: Genesis w/ Robert Alter

This week on the podcast we're starting a new series on the Bible. Once every month Sebastian Faust will be interviewing a different prominent thinker and scholar on a different book of the Bible. For our inaugural episode in this series, Sebastian talked with Dr. Robert Alter, a Hebrew language and comparative literature professor at the University of California, Berkeley. They'll discuss the literary nature of Genesis, the reason for the two creation stories, and Dr. Alter will share his deeply insightful thoughts about the relationship between Abraham and Isaac.

Episode 45: The West Wing Musical Extravaganza

This week's episode is dedicated to the greatest political television show in history and, in particular, the greatest fictional president, Jed Bartlet. The show starts off with a conversation between Sebastian, Jesse and Ben about the use of religion in The West Wing. We'll talk about episodes heavy in religious topics, Bartlet's Catholic faith, and how the show dealt with pain and loss. After that we'll talk about what a Hypothetical Jed Bartlet would do to deal with current economic, political and cultural issues. Every week at On Pop Theology, we read a lot of blog posts to put together our "Best of the Week" post. In the nine months that we've been doing that we've learned a lot about blogging, writing, and the nature of Christianity in our corner of the internet. We've also learned that we don't drink nearly enough wine. So this week, Sebastian, Jesse, and I decided to knock back a little vino as we reflect on the lessons we've learned from reading Christian blogs all these weeks. We'll talk about metaphorical tables, why our existential angst doesn't make us angry enough, and how sometimes we don't understand some of the things the nice people on the internet say. Episode 37: Dick Cheney Sounds Like the Devil

This week Ben, Sebastian, and Jesse dig into the terrible, awful concept of hell, but in a fun way with jokes. They'll trace the development and prominence of hell as it's been portrayed in pop culture, including the representations that don't fit at all with historic Christian theology. Then they'll play a rousing game of "Who The Hell Am I?" where they must chose whether a quote was said by Don Draper, Dick Cheney or the Devil himself. Finally, they'll tell you who they most want to meet when their heretical nonsense sends them to hell.

This week on the show Ben sits down with Jen Thweatt-Bates, theologian and moderator of Gal328.org, an organization working for gender equality in Churches of Christ. Ben and Jen talk about their shared Christian upbringings and breakdown the interpretive steps used to restrict the role of women in the church. This week on the show Ben, Sebastian and Ryan talk about Christianity and alcohol. Episode 29: DOMA, Prop 8, and Exodus International

On the day of the historic Supreme Court rulings which declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and effectively invalidated California's Proposition 8, Jesse, Sebastian and Ben sit down in the studio to reflect on the meaning and importance of the day's events. They pontificate on whether these rulings will be viewed as the tipping point in the gay marriage conversation or if the importance of these rulings is more symbol than substance. Eventually the conversation turns to the recent apology from Exodus International President Alan Chambers and the wider question of the churches response to homosexuality.
